Making a Change as a Future Educator

Prompt: What can I do for the common good as an educator?

When looking at the American education system as a whole, there are definitely some extensive improvements that are needed. As a future educator, I know that I will have to take an active role in working for the common good, because many times no one else will. We can’t always rely on the government, superintendents, or parents for making a change, without putting in the effort directly ourselves. For me, my inspiration for becoming an elementary school teacher was to make a difference in my student’s lives. Building relationships and a safe community for my students will always be most important to me. Making a change starts in the classroom and making sure that each of students needs are met when they’re in my classroom is going to be a huge factor for success. Teachers have to be selfless and to me, the most important issues are the ones that regard our students. So when talking about school safety, budgets, and grading systems, it is important to me that I’m on a committee of some sort to help improve the environment for my learners. In order for me to be the best teacher, I have to make sure that the community around me is supportive and willing to help make teachers jobs more effective. It will be difficult to always be involved in a bunch of committees, so making sure that I choose one or two to be apart of completely will help to make the most change. I think besides that, while teaching, I will focus on the environment and community in and around my school, instead of the logistical concerns. Trying to include parents in their child’s academic journey and getting my students involved in extracurriculars and in the community will be something I strive for.

As for right now, I think the biggest thing I can do is work with students in some way. Being a staff member at the 21C after school program has already allowed me to learn ways to handle behavioral students and build relationships with a close group of students. I know that being with my students everyday has allowed them to feel connected to me and know that I really care for them. I think that’s what education should be about: learning and growing. I have already seen an improvement in the way they carry themselves and it is so heartwarming to be a part of it. There is something so rewarding getting to watch kids become comfortable enough to trust you and want to learn from you. While the job is difficult, I know that I’m making a small difference in the lives of these kids and to me, that’s all that matters.
